A walk on a fire trail along the edge of Lake Wivenhoe with views out over the dam, followed by a BBQ /lunch (B.Y.O.) in the reserve area. Afterwards, we can drive over to the "Spillway Common" to take a closer look at the floodgates of Lake Wivenhoe on the downside of the dam wall. There are several trails to choose from, and the walk can be shortened to suit the group.
The walk itself commences from Fig Tree Rd. following Sheep Station Inlet Rd. The track is mainly paved with bitumen & dirt. We will walk through lightly-timbered areas, with occasional glimpses of the lake. The trails around the dam perimeter are popular with recreational horse riders & we may share the trails with horse riders. Past reports have indicated koalas may be in the area. Plenty of bird life along the edges of the lake & overhead, several large sea eagles were spotted on the pre-walk. There is a designated Somerset/Wivenhoe Dam Wildlife Refuge adjacent to the trail. During the pre-walk we discovered several toilets(porta loos). However, one toilet block was unfit for use.
Lake Wivenhoe is currently at 81% capacity and is managed by S.E. Qld. Water. The dam is used for drinking water supply to S.E. Qld. Cormorant Bay Recreational Area has electric BBQ, shelter sheds, picnic tables, toilets and grassy areas. There are a number of large picnic areas available for groups.
This activity will cater for those who don't wish to do any walking & spend some time in the large recreational area.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the reserve.
