General Information:
I’ve been interested in cycling a portion of this trail for a while, so leading this event has finally motivated me to do so. My selection criteria included varied scenery, properly bridged streams & not having too many nearby roads. I selected the section from Lowood to Esk which Joy (most of it) & I enjoyed cycling recently.
We were pleasantly surprised by how well maintained the trail was. Our hybrid bikes were ideally suited to conditions; mountain bikes were doing it easily & we even saw some road bikes. We found it was best to stop & look, rather than ‘rubber neck’ as you rode along as there were occasional sandy or gravelly loose patches.
You may well ask why I’m planning to head uphill from Lowood to Esk. Mt. Hallen 10km south of Esk is the highest point we reach. By starting from Lowood, we have about 150metres to ascend in 26km to Mt Hallen & then about 100metres to descend in 10km to Esk.
The majority of users go the other way which means most cycles will be coming towards us rather than overtaking us from behind. Also, the plan is to be in Esk with the walkers for lunch. It’s your choice to take either a picnic lunch to enjoy in the park near the old railway station or buy lunch at one of the many eateries in town. There’s a history trail around town to walk after lunch if you still have energy.
I’ll be guided by the weather on the day & the interests & abilities of those who register as to whether we do the whole route planned.
