How did Dingo Mountain get its name ?…..you’ll have to come along on this lovely short bush-walk to find out, along with a lesson in the early history of the local area!
We will car pool from Cobb & Co car park to Bullocky’s Rest in Crows Nest. We will then walk down to the creek junction passing the ‘Pump Hole’ & other landmarks. Locals have spotted koalas & their young ones close here, so eyes up everyone, you’ll never know what we might see ??? We then turn right and cross the creek along an all-weather pathway up to a gate where we start the well-defined track into the Dingo Mtn. Reserve. We follow this track for some time, walking through eucalyptus, apple-gum & iron-bark covered bush. Prior to going up a small hill, we will deviate off track to a not-so-well known cave/overhang & perhaps a spot to have a short break. We’ll retrace our steps back to the main trail & continue on to a point where we can access the ridge-line cross-country and traverse along for a few hundred metres to gain an 180-degree view. Again we’ll retrace our steps back to the main track, continuing on to what the locals refer as the -‘Piggery ‘ where we are able to utilise the facilities -drop toilet/ picnic tables etc ,shelter for a morning tea stop. We then head back along the trail heading making our way back to the creek junction. This is a relatively short walk, but if those feel inclined, we can wander down the delightful Applegum Park walk. Unfortunately, due to heavy construction & housing development, it’s not possible to join up the walk from the Pump Hole through the backstreets of Crow’s Nest at present. At the time of writing, the recent rains have certainly given the bush a healthy green tinge. However, the creeks & waterholes along the way aren’t running with any significant flow!
All going well, we shall return to our vehicles and anyone wishing to par take in a coffee/refreshments in the town of Crow’s nest afterwards is welcome.
