Barney Environs - Mt Maroon Challenging Walk
UPDATE 4 JUNE
I have decided on the Mt Maroon option as the most enjoyable walk for the effort and that its duration is more suited to the available daylight at this time of year. It will still be dependent on the weather.
Mount Maroon summit via the Caves route

Leader’s Contact: 04ir850813 | secretary@toowoomba.bwq.org.au
Meeting Point: At the internal road T-junction (down from amenities, Harry's and Forester's Huts
Meeting Time: 7:00 am for carpooling and 7:15 departure
Travel Distance & Time: 30 min, 24 km to the Cotswold Rd trailhead trialhead car park
Walk Starting Point: Cotswold Rd trailhead
Walk Distance & Time: Around 6–7 hrs, 7 km return, 770m elevation gain,
General Information:
On the approach, the route is on a footpad that gradually climbs to the area of the caves in the sandstone cliff. We can climb into the large cave for a break and to admire the views.
The route then sidles gullies under the cliffs along the north face, gradually rising over a distance of 700-800m. We will then need to climb steeply through larger rocks, gaining 150-200m elevation to reach the plateau (relatively speaking), involving good fitness and scrambling ability.
Once on the plateau we will make our way across rocky, shrubby and wooded areas to meet the main track. From there it will be 15-20 mins to Mount Maroon summit where we can stop for an early lunch and take in the 360 degree views for as long as we like.
Once off the summit, we take the short, flatish trail to the edge where the "tourist" route drops suddenly and steeply in its descent to the east. Care is needed for the initial very steep, scramble down in the rocky, rooty gully, until the ridge is gained for the relentless downhill trail back to the car park.
Walk Rating: M88
What to Bring: At least 2L of water, first-aid kit, sun protection, sturdy boots, warm layers, snacks and lunch
You must register to attend this event. (Please also register for the event 'Mt Barney Environs' which has the general info for the weekend).
