General Information:
Crows Nest National Park is on the headwaters of Crows Nest Creek on the Great Dividing Range north of Toowoomba. The native forest has a wonderful variety of eucalypt trees from gums to stringybarks, bloodwoods and ironbarks. The park is a haven for wildlife including platypus, swamp wallabies, echidnas, bandicoots, lace monitors, birds, and the brush-tailed rock-wallaby Petrogale penicillata, which is vulnerable to extinction in Queensland.
Walk Description:
This walk is off track for a significant part, so long pants and sleeves are recommended. I plan to do a circuit, starting and finishing at the visitors' car park. We will start on Crows Nest creek, climb to a high lookout, drop down to Perseverance Creek and scramble over granite boulders to the junction with Crows Nest creek. We will rock hop back up Crows Nest creek until the novelty is worn off, then up a steep side-gully to Koonin Lookout. Be prepared to scramble on all fours. We will pause there to contemplate if we actually achieved anything, then return to the car park, 2.2 km on the National Park paths. All this activity can be rewarded by a dip in a rock pool before arriving at the car park.
What to Bring:
Carry at least two litres of water, lunch and smoko. Boots or substantial footwear are required. Wear clothes and a hat for sun protection, swimmers if you are swiming, and carry a rainproof to suit the conditions on the day. All walkers should carry a basic first aid kit with snake bandage, stingose, insect repellent. I will be at the April meeting if you want to discuss, or contact me if you have questions.
