Yuraygir NP - Base Camp
Please Note: The Lake Arragan campground has no more space for camper trailers, but tent sites may still be available.
The current fuel situation may lead to cancellations, so keep your eye on campsite availability on the nsw national parks website.
There is a separate event/registration for anyone interested in attending the Pack Walk.
May Day Long Weekend Dates: Saturday 2nd May to Monday 4th May 2026
Leader: Ian Savage 0429135278
Meeting Location & Time: To be determined
Travel Distance & Time: 392km, 4.5hr
Yuraygir NP is an idyllic coastal national park of sandy and pebbly beaches, rocky headlands, pandanus, tee-tree and coastal heath and swamps:
https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/yuraygir-national-park
The base camp will be at the Lake Arragan campground, which - as its name suggests - is situated where a coastal lagoon meets the ocean. There are opportunities for freshwater paddles, beach walks, sunrise rock rambles, and fishing (with suitable permit).
Brooms Head (5mins drive south from the campground) has a patrolled beach during the summer holidays, although we will have to see if this extends to the May Long Weekend.
If attending, you will need to book your own campsite for tent or camper-trailer:
https://nsw.rezexpert.com/book?business_code=500670#nojump
When you book - could you please list your campsite on the event group-chat so others will know where you'll be located - or can book sites nearby.
Note that long weekends are always very busy at these coastal locations, and it is a relief that campground bookings are now site-specific. (Previously we could book into the campground, but it was a free-for-all to then find space to set up).
All vehicles will also need a NSW NPWS Car Permit. I recommend buying an annual (or bi-annual) Country Parks Pass:
https://pass.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/pass/selection
If we follow our usual plan, the base campers may like to walk north to Shelly Head on Sunday for an exploration of the rock formations and to meet the pack walkers for lunch.
More information about the event will be forthcoming over the coming months, but this is advance notice so as not to miss out on a campsite.
